The mobiDRIP infusion pump
The fast and accurate delivery of drugs to patients is a key factor in the efficient movement of patients through the hospital system. But current delivery procedures generally involve the use of expensive electronic pumps that are often in short supply, leading to significant delays and even distress for patients as they wait for pumps to become available.
The mobiDRIP from mobiLIFE is a portable gas-driven pump that enables hospital staff to mix and deliver drugs using off-the-shelf saline bags. It delivers the same accuracy as more expensive electronic pumps, and significantly greater accuracy than existing disposable solutions. It also causes less disruption to procedures than occurs with the sourcing of electronic pumps.
mobiDRIP is based around a mechanical pump powered by a portable aerosol canister containing liquid refrigerant. As this refrigerant vapourises it creates pressure that is used to drive the pump. mobiDRIP incorporates a number of innovations, including a special pressure cuff that ensures a constant driving force by changing shape as the bag empties. The gas regulator uses patented technology that maintains pressure (and therefore infusion delivery) at fluctuations of less than 1 percent.
mobiDRIP has been trialled successfully at hospitals and is approved for sale by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration), and is currently being commercially utilised by five health organisations. It has wide appeal for hospitals that seek to both streamline patient handling and reduce costs.
